Their haunting cry and watchful nature are linked with Tapu (spiritual restriction), guardianship, forewarning and awareness.

As a bird of the night, it is associated with the spirit world, Te Ao Wairua. Also associated with wisdom and Matauranga, a wise symbol for Maori.
