We as Māori (Indigenous People of New Zealand) hold great respect for the Tangaroa the Atua(God) and spiritual guardian of Wai(Water), Moana(Sea), Awa(Rivers) and Roto(Lakes).
Before ocean voyages or before fishing Māori often recite karakia (incantations) to ask Tangaroa for a safe and prosperous trip and to give thanks.

Tangaroa’s realm has always been a source of kai for Māori.
Tangaroa plays a vital part in our cultural survival.

Māori are highly skilled in fishing and diving for food.

The Art of Whakairo, Maori Carving also came from Tangaroa within our oral Traditions.
