She does not shine outward. Her light descends.
Tupua-a-Nuku is the whetū of Matariki that governs all food drawn from the earth — kūmara, taro, hue, and everything grown in the soil. When she rises clearly at Matariki, it is read as a tohu: the coming year will be fertile, abundant, generous.
This artwork gives form to what is usually unseen. Tupua-a-Nuku is not presented as a distant star but as a living presence embedded in the whenua — felt through roots, soil, moisture, and whakapapa. She teaches humility, reciprocity, and our intergenerational responsibility to the land.
In a contemporary context, she speaks to kai sovereignty and environmental healing. A reminder that true prosperity begins below our feet: in the soil, in memory, and in the quiet labour of life growing unseen.
Hang this in your home as a daily invitation to slow down, give thanks, and remember where nourishment really comes from.
