Tupua-a-Nuku

Tupua-a-Nuku is the whetū of Matariki that governs all food drawn from the earth.
She embodies the sacred abundance of the whenua and the unseen forces that sustain life beneath the surface. Associated with kūmara, taro, hue, and all cultivated and wild foods grown in the soil, her clarity during the rising of Matariki is read as a tohu for the fertility of the coming year.

This artwork gives form to what is usually unseen — the slow, patient processes of growth that occur in darkness. Tupua-a-Nuku is not presented as a distant star, but as a living presence embedded within the whenua: felt through roots, soil, moisture, and whakapapa. Her light descends rather than shines outward, reminding us that nourishment is born underground, through care, balance, and time.

Anchored in her relationship with Papatūānuku, Tupua-a-Nuku teaches humility, reciprocity, and intergenerational responsibility. She affirms that food is not a commodity, but a gift — one that depends on respect for the land and right relationship with the natural world.

In a contemporary context, Tupua-a-Nuku speaks to kai sovereignty, environmental healing, and the need to restore damaged relationships with the earth. The work stands as a reminder that true prosperity begins below our feet: in the soil, in memory, and in the quiet labour of life growing unseen.
